Experience the highly stylized dance-theatre tradition of Kathakali up close and personal, in a lecture-demonstration by visiting Kathakali artist Beena Namboothiri.
Kathakali (or Kadhakali) is a highly stylized genre of classical dance-theatre from the southern Indian state of Kerala. Characterized by dramatic hand gestures or Mudras, Kathakali is brings together dance, music, literature and martial arts of the region to tell Puranic stories in an enthralling medium.
Beena Namboothiri, visiting artist from Kerala will combine a brief telling of Kathakali’s history, a demonstration of its technique and a short performance in an intimate and informal setting.
This lecture-demonstration is free and open to all. It is scheduled for Sunday, Nov 10 2024 at Studio 1 (Basement) of The Performing Dance Center.
